CPM means cost per mille: what you pay for 1,000 ad impressions. Use the calculator to work out CPM from your spend and impressions, the cost of a planned number of impressions, or how many impressions a budget will buy. Below it: the CPM formula, what affects CPM on Meta and YouTube in India, and how CPM relates to CPC, CTR and ROAS.

CPM formula
Example: ₹50,000 spent for 4,00,000 impressions → (50,000 ÷ 4,00,000) × 1,000 = ₹125 CPM.
Reverse: Cost = CPM × Impressions ÷ 1,000 · Impressions = Cost ÷ CPM × 1,000
What is CPM in advertising?
"Mille" is Latin for thousand. CPM is the price of reaching people a thousand times, used across TV, print, display, Meta, YouTube and most digital ad platforms. On auction-based platforms such as Meta, you usually don't set a CPM: you set a budget and an objective, and the CPM is the result of the auction. That makes CPM a useful health metric for how expensive your audience is to reach.
What affects CPM on Meta and YouTube in India
- Audience and competition. Audiences many advertisers want (metro, higher-income, specific interests) cost more to reach.
- Season. CPMs typically rise in the festive season (Diwali, big sale events) and at quarter or year end, when more advertisers bid.
- Placement and format. Reels, Stories, Feed and in-stream video are priced differently.
- Campaign objective. Optimising for purchases often shows higher CPMs than optimising for reach, because Meta targets people more likely to convert.
- Ad quality and engagement. Ads people watch and engage with tend to win auctions more efficiently. Strong hooks help.
- Creative fatigue. As frequency rises and engagement falls, costs usually creep up; see creative fatigue.

CPM vs CPC vs CPA
- CPM: cost per 1,000 impressions (paying for reach).
- CPC: cost per click. CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000) when CTR is a decimal. A ₹125 CPM with a 1% CTR gives a ₹12.50 CPC.
- CPA: cost per acquisition (purchase, lead, install). It combines CPM, CTR and conversion rate.
A low CPM is not automatically good: cheap impressions that nobody clicks or buys from still waste money. Judge campaigns on cost per result and ROAS, and use CPM to diagnose why costs move.
How to lower your CPM
- Broaden targeting where possible so the algorithm has more people to choose from.
- Use multiple placements (Advantage+ placements) rather than forcing one expensive slot.
- Refresh creative regularly to keep engagement up.
- Make ads that fit the placement: 9:16 video with captions for Reels and Stories.
- Plan around peak seasons by building audiences and testing creative before festive CPMs rise.
FAQs
How do you calculate CPM?
Divide total ad cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. ₹50,000 for 4,00,000 impressions is a CPM of ₹125.
What does CPM stand for?
Cost per mille, meaning cost per thousand impressions.
What is a good CPM on Instagram in India?
It varies widely by audience, objective, placement and season. Compare against your own account history and judge results on cost per purchase or lead, not CPM alone.
Is a lower CPM always better?
No. A low CPM with poor click-through or conversion can cost more per customer than a higher CPM that reaches the right buyers.
How are CPM and CPC related?
CPC equals CPM divided by (CTR × 1,000), with CTR as a decimal. Higher click-through rates bring down cost per click at the same CPM.
