"How much do video ads cost in India?" has two answers, and most articles blur them together. There is the cost to make the video, and the cost to run it on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. A brand can spend very little on one and a lot on the other, and the right split depends on how many ads you need and how fast they wear out.
This guide breaks both down the way we explain it to founders and marketing teams at Thumbstoppers, a performance creative agency in Mumbai and Bangalore. We don't publish rate cards with made-up "average" prices; instead you'll get the cost drivers, the questions that change a quote, and a simple way to work out your own budget.
Part 1: the cost of making a video ad
Production cost in India ranges from almost nothing (a founder recording on a phone) to the budget of a TV commercial. What moves the number is not "video" itself but these line items:
1. Concept and scripting
Research into your buyer, the angles to test, and scripts with several hook options. This is cheap relative to the shoot but decides most of the result. Skipping it is the most expensive saving you can make.
2. Talent: creators, actors or experts
Creator fees depend on whether you are paying for on-camera work only or also for posting to their audience. For ads you usually only need the first, plus permission to run the video as an ad (see usage rights below). Professional actors, doctors, advisors and known faces cost more than everyday creators.
3. Shoot: crew, locations, equipment
A phone-shot creator video in a real home needs one person. A studio product shoot needs a camera operator, lighting, a set and a producer. The biggest efficiency lever is batching: shooting several concepts and several creators in one shoot day, so each finished ad carries a fraction of the day's cost.
4. Editing and versions
Captions, music, on-screen text and pacing for sound-off viewing, then the versions every ad account needs: 9:16 for Reels and Stories, 4:5 and 1:1 for feed, 16:9 for YouTube. Alternative hooks on the same body are cheap to add at the edit stage and are where much of the testing value comes from.
5. Usage rights and duration
When a creator appears in your ad, the contract should state where the video can run (paid social, website, marketplaces, TV), for how long, and whether it can be edited. Wider and longer rights cost more. Agree this before the shoot; renegotiating later, after an ad has become a winner, is always more expensive.
6. Revisions and languages
Extra rounds of changes, Hindi/English/regional versions and dubbing all add cost. A clear brief and one approver keep this small.
Part 2: the cost of running video ads on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube
Media cost is decided in an auction, so there is no fixed price per view. What you pay depends on:
- Audience and competition: metro audiences and categories with many advertisers (fintech, skincare, education around exam season) are bid up more.
- Objective: paying for reach or video views is cheaper per impression than optimising for purchases or leads, but the purchase-optimised campaign is usually the one that pays back.
- Season: festive periods such as Diwali, big sale events and the end of the financial year tend to raise auction prices.
- Creative quality: this is the part people underestimate. Platforms reward ads that people watch and engage with, so a stronger hook can lower what you pay for the same result. A weak ad is expensive at any budget.
- Creative fatigue: as the same people see an ad repeatedly, results usually decline and cost per result rises. New ads reset that.
The metrics to watch are cost per thousand impressions (CPM), cost per click, cost per view (on YouTube), and, the ones that matter, cost per lead or purchase and return on ad spend (ROAS). Read them in your own Ads Manager rather than relying on someone else's "average" figures, which mix very different categories.
How to work out your own video ad budget
Work backwards from the business result, not forwards from a round number:
- Set a target cost per purchase or lead you can afford from your margin or customer lifetime value.
- Decide the monthly media budget needed to get enough results for the platform to learn. Meta's guidance is that an ad set exits the learning phase after roughly 50 optimisation events in a week, so tiny budgets on purchase objectives often never stabilise.
- Size the creative pipeline to the media budget. The more you spend, the faster ads fatigue and the more new ads you need each month. A small account might do well with a handful of fresh ads a month; a large one needs a steady stream.
- Reserve part of the media budget for testing new concepts, so you always have the next winner ready before the current one wears out.
Illustrative example (made-up numbers to show the method, not a quote or benchmark): if your target cost per purchase is ₹500 and you want around 50 purchases a week for stable learning, you're looking at roughly ₹25,000 a week in media for that ad set, before testing budget. If those ads tire within three or four weeks, you need new concepts on a monthly cycle, and your production plan should match that pace.
Agency vs. freelancer vs. in-house: what changes the cost
- Freelancers and individual creators are usually cheapest per video, but you do the strategy, scripting, briefing and quality control yourself.
- In-house teams make sense once you need a high, steady volume; the cost is salaries, equipment and the time to build the skill.
- Production houses and ad film makers are built for brand films and TVCs, with budgets to match. Great for a hero film; heavy for a monthly flow of social ads.
- A performance creative agency like us sits between: strategy, scripts, casting, production and edits in one team, priced per batch, judged on ad results. See Meta ads creative and our D2C work.
Ways to spend less without getting worse ads
- Batch shoots: many concepts, one day.
- Write multiple hooks for each video; new openings on a proven body are the cheapest fresh creative there is.
- Reuse footage across formats and languages.
- Agree usage rights upfront.
- Kill losers quickly and put budget behind winners; don't let a weak ad run for weeks "to be sure".

FAQs
How much does it cost to make a video ad in India?
It depends on talent, shoot complexity, number of versions, languages and usage rights. A phone-shot founder video can cost almost nothing to make, while a studio shoot with actors and a full crew costs far more. The cost per finished ad falls when you shoot several concepts and hooks in one batch, which is how performance creative agencies usually price.
How much do Instagram video ads cost to run in India?
There is no fixed price: Instagram and Facebook ads are sold in an auction, so cost depends on your audience, objective, category competition, season and how good the ad is. Set a target cost per purchase or lead from your margins, then check actual CPM, CPC and cost per result in Ads Manager.
Are YouTube video ads cheaper than Instagram ads?
Sometimes per view, but not always per sale. YouTube often charges per view or per impression for awareness formats, while Instagram and Facebook campaigns are usually optimised for purchases or leads. Compare platforms on cost per result and return on ad spend, not on cost per view.
What is a good starting budget for video ads?
Enough to give the platform data to learn. Meta says an ad set exits its learning phase after about 50 optimisation events in a week, so work out what 50 purchases or leads would cost at your target cost per result and budget around that, plus a share for testing new creatives.
How often do I need new video ads?
When results start to decline as the same people keep seeing an ad (creative fatigue). Larger budgets wear ads out faster. Many brands running steady Meta spend refresh creatives monthly, and use new hooks on proven ads to extend their life.
Does Thumbstoppers publish fixed prices?
No. We quote per batch or monthly scope after understanding your product, category, languages and how many ads your media budget needs, because a fixed rate card would be misleading across very different briefs. Email naineel@hungryfolksmedia.com for a scoped quote.
