Hair care is one of the hardest categories to advertise well. Hair fall, dandruff, frizz and grey hair are emotional problems, results take weeks, and shoppers have been promised miracles by every shampoo ad they have ever seen. Most hair care ads in India still look the same: a model flicking glossy hair, a bottle, a discount. Shoppers scroll past. What stops them is a real person with their hair problem, the product being used the way they would use it, and a believable reason it might work for them.

Thumbstoppers is a performance creative agency in Mumbai and Bangalore. We plan, script, cast, shoot and edit short-form video ads for hair care, skincare and personal care brands, and judge them on hook rate, cost per purchase and return on ad spend. We have made ads for D2C hair care, scalp care and Ayurvedic personal care brands; two of them are below. We don't buy media; we make the ads your performance team, or ours, puts money behind.

Why hair care ads are different

Hair care ad formats that tend to work

Problem-first creator testimonials

A creator with the actual problem (a widening parting, a comb full of hair, flakes on a black T-shirt) says it out loud in the first line, then shows their routine. The viewer with the same problem keeps watching because it is about them.

Ritual and routine demos

Oiling, scalp massage, wash day, the overnight mask. Routine content feels native to Reels and Stories and shows exactly how the product fits into a week. It also lets you sell the regimen, not just one bottle.

Ingredient and Ayurveda explainers

Rosemary, onion, bhringraj, redensyl, biotin, keratin, sulphate-free formulas: shoppers search for these by name. A clear explanation of what the ingredient does and who it suits builds more trust than a list of percentages. For Ayurvedic brands, a practitioner explaining the herbs works well.

Expert-led ads

A trichologist, dermatologist or Ayurveda practitioner explaining why hair falls and what helps. These need careful scripting so they inform rather than promise outcomes.

Honest before-and-after

Only where results are real, dated and unretouched, with the same lighting and angle. Done badly, before-and-after content gets ads rejected and erodes trust; done honestly, it is very persuasive.

Myth busters

"Oiling overnight doesn't do what you think", "you're washing your hair too often", "your shampoo isn't the problem". Contrarian hooks earn attention, and the answer is a natural lead-in to the product.

Hair care ads we've made

Two real hair care ads from our work, labelled by category. We don't publish client names or performance data.

Personalised hair care: the daily commuter

Format: Relatable routine, English · 34 seconds

A working woman opens with "this saved me from switching to work from home forever", then shows the 30-kilometre commute, the dust and the heat that were wrecking her scalp. She takes the brand's hair quiz on her laptop and unboxes products made for her. The problem (pollution, an itchy scalp) is one millions of city commuters live with, and the personalisation is shown, not just claimed.

Scalp care: a dandruff tonic, tested over four weeks

Format: Creator diary with scalp close-ups, English · 50 seconds

She opens with three years of failed dandruff fixes, then shows her scalp on day one with the flakes visible, how she applies the tonic overnight, and check-ins at two and four weeks. The diary structure makes slow results watchable, and the scalp close-ups give proof a bottle shot can't.

How we make hair care ads

  1. Map the problems. We split your audience by hair concern, hair type and life stage, and write a first line for each.
  2. Script several hooks per concept. Usually three to five opening variations for each idea, because the opening decides most of an ad's results.
  3. Cast for the problem. Creators who actually have the hair type and concern, in the languages your customers speak.
  4. Shoot for texture. Macro shots of application, scalp and lengths, in natural light, without heavy filters.
  5. Edit for every placement. 9:16 for Reels and Stories, 4:5 for Feed, captions for mute viewing, and short cut-downs of the strongest moments.
  6. Iterate on spend data. We read hook rate, hold rate and cost per purchase, keep what converts and reshoot what doesn't.

What to measure

For the ad: hook rate (3-second views divided by impressions), hold rate, click-through rate and cost per purchase. For the business: blended return on ad spend, first-order margin and repeat rate. Hair care is a repeat category, so creative for regimens, refills and second products matters as much as first-order ads. Our guides on Meta ads cost in India and what video ads cost to make explain the maths.

FAQs

What makes a good hair care ad?

A good hair care ad names a specific hair problem in the first two seconds, shows the product being used on real hair, explains why it might work in plain language and avoids over-promising. Problem-first testimonials, routine demos and ingredient explainers are the formats that tend to perform best.

Which ad formats work best for hair care brands on Instagram and Facebook?

Problem-first creator testimonials, oiling and wash-day routines, ingredient or Ayurveda explainers, expert-led ads, honest before-and-after content (when results are real) and myth-buster hooks. We test several formats and hooks per product and make more of what converts.

Can hair care ads claim to stop hair fall or regrow hair?

Claims must be substantiated under the ASCI code, and cosmetics can't be advertised as treating a disease. Regrowth and cure claims are high-risk. We write scripts to avoid unsupported claims and flag anything your team needs evidence for. This is not legal advice.

How many ads does a hair care brand need each month?

It depends on spend, but brands spending a few lakh a month on Meta usually need several new concepts and multiple hook variations every month, because creative fatigues quickly in personal care.

Do you work with Ayurvedic hair care brands?

Yes. Ayurvedic and herbal brands often do well with practitioner-led explainers and ingredient stories, in Hindi and regional languages as well as English.

Do you only make hair care ads?

No. We make video ads for skincare, beauty, personal care, nutrition, fintech, edtech and other D2C and app brands.
