Meta ads cost in India: how pricing works and how to budget

There's no fixed price for Facebook and Instagram ads. Here's how Meta's auction sets your costs, which numbers to track, and how to set a daily and monthly budget that works.

"How much do Meta ads cost in India?" has no single price, because Meta doesn't sell ads at a fixed rate. You set a budget, and Meta runs an auction every time someone in your audience opens Instagram or Facebook. What you pay per thousand impressions, per click or per sale depends on who you target, when, how good your ad is, and what you ask Meta to optimise for.

This guide explains how Meta ad pricing works for Indian advertisers, the numbers you should actually track, how to set a sensible daily and monthly budget, and why creative is the lever most brands under-use. We don't quote "average CPMs" here: published averages mix different industries, objectives and years, and they mislead more than they help. Your own account data is the only benchmark that matters.

How Meta charges you

The cost metrics that matter

CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)

Spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. The "price of attention". It rises with competition (festive season, sale periods, crowded categories) and narrow audiences.

CPC and CTR

Cost per link click = spend ÷ link clicks. Click-through rate = clicks ÷ impressions. A stronger hook and clearer offer raise CTR, which lowers CPC even if CPM stays the same.

CPL, CPI and CPA

Cost per lead, per install or per acquisition (purchase, sign-up, KYC-complete user). This is the number your business actually cares about. It equals CPM ÷ 1,000 ÷ (the share of impressions that turn into that action).

ROAS

Revenue attributed to ads ÷ ad spend. For D2C brands, compare ROAS with your margins: a 2x ROAS can be profitable for one brand and loss-making for another.

What makes Meta ads cheaper or more expensive in India

How much should you spend per day and per month?

Work backwards from the result you want, not from a round number:

  1. Estimate your target cost per result. For example, the most you can pay for a purchase or a qualified lead and still make money.
  2. Budget for learning. To give one ad set a fair chance at ~50 conversions a week, weekly budget ≈ target cost per result × 50. Divide by 7 for a daily budget.
  3. If that's too high, optimise for an earlier event (add to cart, lead, install) that happens more often, and move down the funnel as volume grows.
  4. Keep a creative testing budget separate from your scaling budget, so new concepts get impressions without starving proven ads.
Illustrative example (assumed numbers, not a benchmark): a skincare brand decides it can pay up to ₹600 per first purchase. To aim for 50 purchases a week it would need about ₹30,000 a week (≈ ₹4,300 a day, ≈ ₹1.3 lakh a month) plus GST. If that's too much, it might optimise for add-to-cart first, where events are more frequent.

Monthly cost = daily budget × days + GST + the cost of making the ads. Production is a separate line item; see our guide to how much video ads cost in India.

Instagram vs Facebook ad costs

Instagram and Facebook ads are bought in the same Meta Ads Manager and the same auction. You can restrict placements to Instagram only, but you'll often pay more for the narrower inventory. Most advertisers let Meta choose placements and judge results by cost per result across both apps. If your audience lives on Reels, make vertical 9:16 creative so the ad looks native wherever Meta places it.

Why creative decides your Meta ad cost

Two brands with the same budget and audience can see very different costs per purchase. The difference is usually the ad: how quickly it earns attention (hook rate), whether people keep watching (hold rate), and whether it gives a clear reason to act. Meta's delivery system rewards ads that people engage with, so better creative lowers CPM and raises conversion rate.

This is the work we do at Thumbstoppers: short-form video ads built and iterated for Meta, judged on cost per result. See our Meta ads creative agency page, or how we work with D2C brands and fintech brands.

What agencies charge on top of ad spend

Ad spend goes to Meta; agency fees are separate. Common models in India are a monthly retainer for managing the account, a percentage of ad spend, or a per-creative or per-batch fee for making ads. Ask what's included (strategy, creative, reporting), whether fees scale with spend, and who owns the ad account and creatives.

FAQs

What is the minimum budget for Meta ads in India?

Meta sets minimum daily budgets that depend on your currency and what you optimise for, and shows the minimum in Ads Manager when you create an ad set. In practice the useful budget is set by your target cost per result: enough to get meaningful data, ideally around 50 optimisation events a week per ad set.

How much do Instagram ads cost per day in India?

As much as you decide. You set the daily budget; what that budget buys (impressions, clicks, leads, sales) depends on your audience, season, objective and creative. Start from your target cost per result and the learning-phase guidance rather than a fixed daily amount.

Is GST charged on Meta ads in India?

Indian advertisers billed in rupees see GST added to their Meta ad invoices on top of ad spend. Check the tax settings and invoices in your Meta billing section and speak to your accountant about input tax credit.

Why did my Meta ad costs suddenly increase?

Common reasons are seasonal competition (festive and sale periods), creative fatigue (rising frequency, falling CTR), a narrower audience, changes to the optimisation event, ad sets falling back into learning, or a landing-page problem lowering conversion rate.

Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?

They are sold in the same auction, so neither is reliably cheaper. Letting Meta choose placements usually gives the lowest cost per result; restricting to one app narrows inventory and can raise costs.

How can I reduce my cost per purchase on Meta?

Improve the creative (stronger hooks, clearer offers, more variants), give ad sets enough budget to exit learning, use broad targeting with good creative, fix landing-page speed and offer, and refresh ads before fatigue sets in.
