Skincare is one of the most crowded categories on Instagram and Facebook in India. Every week there is a new serum, sunscreen or cleanser, and most of their ads look the same: a bottle on a pastel background, an ingredient name in big type, a discount sticker. Shoppers scroll past them. What makes a skincare shopper stop is seeing the texture on real skin, hearing someone with their skin type explain why it worked for them, or finally understanding what an ingredient actually does.
Thumbstoppers is a performance creative agency in Mumbai and Bangalore. We plan, script, cast, shoot and edit short-form video ads for skincare, beauty and personal care brands, and judge them on hook rate, cost per purchase and return on ad spend. We have made ads for beauty and personal care brands including Swiss Beauty, Fixderma and Dabur. We don't buy media or run your SEO; we make the ads your performance team, or ours, puts money behind.
Why skincare ads are different
- The product is invisible in a still frame. A serum in a bottle tells the shopper nothing. Texture, absorption, finish (matte, dewy, white cast or none) and how it sits under makeup only show up in video, close to the skin.
- Skin type decides everything. Oily, dry, sensitive and acne-prone shoppers want to see someone like them. One generic ad rarely works for all four; a set of ads cast for each usually does.
- Trust is low and claims are checked. Indian shoppers have seen a lot of over-promising. Advertising claims must be substantiated under the ASCI code, and ASCI's influencer guidelines say filters should not exaggerate what a beauty product can do. Cosmetics also can't be advertised as treating a disease. We write scripts with this in mind and flag claims your team needs to back up (this is not legal advice).
- Results take weeks, attention takes seconds. Real skincare results take time, but every ad gets one or two seconds. Most winning ads sell the first experience (the feel, the routine, the ingredient story) and let honest, dated results do the rest.
- Repeat purchase is the business. A first order at a loss can still be profitable if the customer comes back. Creative for regimens, refills and second products matters as much as acquisition ads.
Skincare ad formats that tend to work
Texture and application close-ups
Macro shots of the product on skin: the swatch, the spread, the finish a minute later. Often the strongest opening seconds in the category because they answer the first question a shopper has: what does it feel like?
Creator routines and GRWM
A creator with the target skin type walks through a morning or night routine and places the product naturally. Feels native to Reels and Stories, and lets you show how the product fits with the things shoppers already use.
Ingredient explainers
Niacinamide, salicylic acid, ceramides, retinol, vitamin C, sunscreen filters: shoppers search for these by name. A clear 20-second explanation of what the ingredient does, who it suits and how to use it builds more trust than a list of percentages.
Expert-led ads
For derma and cosmeceutical brands, a qualified expert explaining a concern (acne marks, tanning, sensitivity) and how to approach it. These need careful scripting so they inform rather than promise outcomes.
Honest before and after
Only when the results are real, unretouched, shot in the same light and dated. Done honestly they are persuasive; done badly they damage trust and can breach advertising guidelines.
Problem and myth ads
"Why your sunscreen leaves a white cast", "three mistakes people make with exfoliating acids". These hooks stop people with that exact problem and lead naturally into the product.
Offer and sale-season edits
Short cut-downs for big sale periods on your website and marketplaces such as Nykaa and Amazon: the hero product, the offer, a reason to buy now. Made in advance so you're not briefing in the week of the sale.
Categories we make ads for
- Everyday skincare: cleansers, moisturisers, serums, sunscreens, lip care.
- Concern-led and derma brands: acne, pigmentation, sensitive skin, cosmeceuticals.
- Makeup and beauty: base, colour cosmetics and tools, where swatches and shade range sell.
- Haircare and body care: scalp care, hair oils, body lotions and washes.
- Ayurvedic and natural beauty: ingredient heritage told in a way that still feels modern and specific.
- Men's grooming: beard, face and body care, often with a different tone and cast.
How we build skincare ads that sell
- Read the data and reviews. Your best-selling products, your account's winning and losing ads, and the words customers use in reviews and comments. Review language is often the best hook copy there is.
- Map angles to skin types and concerns. For each hero product we list the concerns, skin types and objections (will it break me out, will it leave a cast, is it safe with my other products) and plan one ad per angle.
- Write several hooks per concept. The first two seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest, so each concept gets several openings to test. See our guide to hook rate on Meta ads for how we measure them.
- Cast for real skin. Creators and talent whose skin type, tone and age match your customer, with real texture rather than heavy filters.
- Shoot for close-ups and placements. Macro texture shots, natural light, and 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1 edits so each ad fits Reels, Stories and Feed.
- Test, read, iterate. We read hook rate, hold rate, click-through and cost per purchase, make new versions of the winners and replace ads before creative fatigue sets in.
What to measure
For acquisition ads: hook rate (3-second views divided by impressions), hold rate, click-through rate, cost per add-to-cart and cost per purchase. For the business: blended return on ad spend, first-order margin and repeat rate by product. A skincare ad with a slightly higher cost per purchase can still be the better ad if it sells the product people reorder. Choosing a skincare marketing agency in India
Most skincare brands work with a mix of partners: a performance or media team, an influencer agency, sometimes a brand agency, and a creative partner. Ask any agency you speak to:
- Have you made ads for skincare or beauty brands, and can we see them running?
- How do you handle claims, before-and-after content and creator filters?
- How many concepts and hook variations do we get each month, and how fast can you turn around new versions of a winner?
- Do you plan creative around repeat purchase and regimens, not just first orders?
- Who casts the creators, and do they match our customers' skin types?
If you're a D2C brand selling more than skincare, see our page on social media and ad creative for D2C brands. For Meta-specific work, see our Meta ads creative agency page, and if you want to shoot in person, our Mumbai and Bangalore video teams.
FAQs
What does a skincare marketing agency do?
It depends on the agency. Full-service agencies may handle social media, influencer campaigns, media buying and SEO. Thumbstoppers focuses on the short-form video ads that run in your paid campaigns on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, made to lower cost per purchase and improve return on ad spend.
Which ad formats work best for skincare brands in India?
Texture and application close-ups, creator routines cast by skin type, ingredient explainers, expert-led ads for derma brands, problem or myth hooks, and honest, unretouched before-and-after content when results are real. We test several formats and hooks per product and make more of what converts.
Can skincare ads show before and after results?
They can when the results are genuine, unretouched, shot in comparable conditions and supported by evidence. Claims must be substantiated under the ASCI code, and filters should not exaggerate a product's effect. We flag claims your team needs to back up; check final copy with your regulatory or legal advisor.
Do you work with influencers and creators for skincare ads?
Yes. We cast creators and talent whose skin type, tone and age match your customer and script them for paid ads. If you already work with an influencer agency, we can turn their content into ad-ready edits and new hook variations.
Which beauty and personal care brands have you worked with?
Our clients include Swiss Beauty, Fixderma and Dabur, alongside D2C, fintech and edtech brands. Our homepage shows ads we have made.
How much do skincare video ads cost to make?
It depends on the number of concepts, creators, shoot days and edits. Many brands start with a monthly batch of concepts with several hook variations each. Our guide to video ad costs in India explains the main cost drivers, and we share a quote after a short call.
